Are you sick of being obsessed with food?
I know exactly how it feels because I’ve been there too.
Particularly those sneaky “treat” foods like chocolate, ice cream and pizza.
Because I bet that you aren’t obsessing about bananas or apples are you?
Instead, I’m sure you are obsessing more about chocolate, crisps, pizzas and burgers. Am I right?
Thought so!
So let’s look at what is really causing you to be obsessed with food, and what to do about it.
Obsessed with food choices?
Do you sometimes feel like you spend way too much time in the supermarket trying to find the healthiest option?
Perhaps you are reading every label trying to work out what foods you should and shouldn’t eat?
It can be hard to try and understand what are the right and wrong foods to eat. There is so much differing information around.
Don’t eat carbs, mostly eat animal protein and fat.
Don’t eat animal protein and fat, just eat a vegan diet filled with carbs.
It can be confusing when “experts” say such different advice.
Why are you obsessed with food?
As someone who wants to be healthy, with so many competing health guidelines, it’s understandable that you might have become so obsessed with food.
Beyond trying to choose between the healthiest foods, then there is the issue of avoiding “naughty” junk foods.
Because let's be honest, as much as you might sometimes struggle with what are the healthiest food options, I'm sure the foods that you are most obsessed with are the "naughty" treats.
So let’s look at why you are more obsessed with junk food than healthy food.
Why are you more obsessed with junk food
It can be really hard to stop being obsessed with food, especially the “naughty” foods that we have been told to avoid if we want to lose weight.
A big part of why you are obsessed with junk food is because you have been told over and over that it is a “naughty” or “bad” food and shouldn't have it.
The problem here is that restricting certain foods in this way actually makes them more desirable, because it puts them up on a pedestal.
We as humans have a tendency to want what we can’t have. Think of every child and how they always want the toy that another child is playing with!
It’s exactly the same with restricting foods. When you say that you can't have them, it just makes you want them more.
Interestingly, studies also show that when you stop restricting foods, you are more likely to lose weight!
That’s right, by restricting foods, you are actually more likely to have a higher BMI. Sounds crazy right, but it’s true.
How to stop obsessing over food and lose weight?
The answer then of how to lose weight without dieting or restricting certain foods is firstly to allow absolutely all food.
Remember that by allowing all foods, studies show that you are less likely to be overweight.
Then you might be wondering how you can include all foods and not feel out of control with them.
How to eat all foods without losing control
Knowing that you can eat all foods is definitely the first step to stop being obsessed with food.
The next step is to learn how to eat any food without losing control. And the answer to this is to eat foods mindfully and intentionally.
Studies show that people who eat mindfully are more likely to consume less calories.
Mindful eating allows you to connect with your natural hunger and full signals. It makes it easier for you to only eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. It also helps to avoid eating when you are simply bored or stressed.
Eat food mindfully for weight loss: 2 simple tricks
Slow down
Studies show that people who eat quickly are significantly more likely to be overweight or obese.
This is because slowing down allows your stomach more time to register that it’s full.
It also helps you to savour the flavour of your food and really enjoy what you are eating, which often means you feel more satisfied with less of your favourite treats.
Remove distractions
Studies also show that you are likely to consume less calories if you remove distractions when you eat.
So turn off the TV, put away your phone and enjoy eating without distractions!
To show that this all really works, let's look at the French, who are famous for indulging in rich food.
Be like the French, as they eat whatever they want!
If you aren’t convinced that you can eat whatever you want yet, then just think of the French.
Their diet is filled with buttery pastries, rich cheeses, meats and decadent desserts. Yet they have some of the lowest obesity rates compared with other developed countries.
If the French can eat whatever they want, then so can you.
The secret is learning how to savour the flavour of your food, so that you stop obsessing about food. So stop obsessing about what foods you can and cant eat. Imagine how much more fun it would be to enjoy all delicious foods and treats without having to worry about putting on weight!
