You’ve probably heard a lot of different advice about the best way to lose weight.
And maybe you’re still asking yourself whether you need a weight loss fitness trainer when there is so much contradictory information?
“Do more cardio to lose weight”
“HIIT is best for weight loss”
“Diet is 80% of weight loss”
But which is true?
And which of these can help you to achieve your weight loss goals?
Weight loss fitness trainer: what do they do?
Weight loss fitness trainers aim to help you to lose weight through fitness and exercise.
Exercise is an absolutely brilliant way to feel good and get fit. Aside from the strength and fitness aspect, studies have shown that when you exercise, feel good endorphins are released. And perhaps you have felt this after you have endured a heavy workout, but felt great afterwards?
But what about the impact of exercise on weight loss?
Will a weight loss fitness trainer actually help you lose weight?
Have you ever taken up running or some other exercise, only to find that the scales didn’t budge?
Maybe you’re here thinking that you just haven’t found the right fitness trainer or weight loss exercise routine yet.
But have you ever wondered whether it might be something else going on than the wrong workout for weight loss?
Because unfortunately, studies show that weight loss doesn’t always happen with exercise. In fact, studies show that you need to workout for at least an hour everyday to achieve any weight loss. Plus, this is only if you also significantly change your diet.
What this means is that even if you do a gruelling workout for over an hour every single day, it’s unlikely to have any impact on your weight unless you make significant dietary changes as well.
Now before you think that I’m about to tell you to cut out all of your favourite foods and start restricting yourself, I have some good news for you.
Can you lose weight without exercise?
The great news is that you can absolutely lose weight without exercising. In fact, you can also lose weight without dieting or restricting any of your favourite foods.
Let me explain.
Can you think of anyone who seems to be able to stay lean no matter what they eat, nor how much? It's kind of annoying right? Watching them enjoy their burger or dessert, not seeming to have a care in the world about how hard it is for you to resist that same food but also struggle with your weight.
Have you ever wondered how they seem to be able to eat whatever they want and not have to worry about their weight?
You might just think that they have a faster metabolism. And that is absolutely part of what is going on. Though you might be surprised to hear that you can fix this issue.
Because studies show that a main reason for a slowed metabolism is actually dieting.
And it makes sense when you think about the evolution of our brains. They have evolved to survive times of famine where there is a lack of food. It’s quite an amazing response really, to be able to slow down our metabolism and maintain our weight when there is a lack of food.
Unfortunately though, studies also show that our brains can’t distinguish between times of famine and dieting. The natural survival responses equally start during a diet as your brain perceives a lack of food. And perhaps you have experienced this, where you lost some weight initially on a diet or workout plan, only to hit a weight loss plateau?
That is your body fighting to try and survive a perceived famine!
So if neither dieting nor exercise are the answer to weight loss, you are probably wondering what’s left to do!?
This is where the really good news comes in. Because you can absolutely lose weight without any gruelling workouts or restrictive diets.
How to lose weight without a fitness trainer
The short answer is to be like those annoying people who can eat whatever they want and stay lean.
Their trick is that they eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. I know this sounds overly simplistic, but consider that they haven’t had years of dieting and calorie counting. Instead of listening to the latest fad diet or influencer of how much they “should” eat, they simply listen to their own inner hunger signals, eating when they are hungry and stopping when they are full.
Learning how to reconnect with your natural hunger and full signals is exactly how you can lose weight without dieting as well. The practice is called intuitive eating and it's the secret to losing weight without dieting or exercise.
It can take some time and a little bit of effort to reconnect with your natural hunger signals, particularly if you have dieted for a long time and ignored those same signals. A couple of tricks that will help you though are;
Slow down and savour the flavour of your food. Not only will this help to enjoy the taste of your food more, it will also give your stomach a chance to let you know when you have eaten enough. Studies support that you will eat less by slowing down too, so put your fork or food down between mouthfuls, chew slowly and enjoy your food!
Removing distractions also helps to reconnect with your natural hunger signals, and studies also show that you will likely eat less food when you put down your phone and turn off the TV whilst you are eating.
Now for some more good news. Let’s talk about how you can include all of your favourite foods and still lose weight.
Lose weight without any food restrictions
“Naturally” lean people also don’t restrict any foods. This is a really important point as well, because there is so much information out there now demonising foods, and telling you to consider what is healthy food vs nutritious food.
Now of course some food is more nutritious than others. I’m certainly not going to pretend that a chocolate bar is a healthier snack than an apple.
But, issues arise when you try to restrict certain foods. In fact, studies show that you are more likely to put on weight when you try to restrict foods! It leads to you becoming obsessed with those foods that you are trying to avoid, and often result in binge eating.
It’s human nature to want what we can’t have. And unfortunately when you try to tell yourself that you can’t have something, it just makes you want it even more!
So it’s much better to allow yourself to eat all foods, then use the previous steps of slowing down and removing distractions to really savour the flavour of your food.
Next steps
The best thing to do when trying this method is to bring a playful approach and an open mind. Try a bit of chocolate, eat it slowly without distractions. Maybe you will find that you can taste the flavours more, enjoy the experience more and be satisfied with less.
