You want to lose weight.

I totally understand.

But are you struggling with yoyo dieting?

Always feeling like you are either restricting yourself or falling off the wagon?

The solution to break free from yoyo dieting might surprise you, and you can easily lose weight using this method too.

Yoyo dieting meaning and realities

Just to make sure we are on the same page, what I mean by yoyo dieting is that cycle of dieting and non-dieting, where you go through periods of restricting and overindulgence.

Maybe you can relate to this? Where initially on a diet your willpower and resolve are strong, and you get excited seeing the results on the scale.

But like you, I know that feeling all too well when weight loss stalls. It can be so frustrating when you feel like you are still putting in the effort, restricting yourself and missing out on your favourite foods, but the scales just don’t budge.

Then how often does it lead to your willpower running out. You promise to indulge just in just a bit of chocolate, only to destroy the whole block in a matter of minutes.

But tomorrow will be better, right?

Yeah, until tomorrow night comes around and you binge again!

And don’t worry, it’s not your fault. Let me explain what to do instead and how you can lose weight without exercise or dieting.

What causes yoyo dieting

When you diet, you are generally trying to restrict foods and/or quantities to try and lose weight. However, there are two key issues with restricting food that cause yoyo dieting.

Firstly, it’s important to consider that our brains have evolved over millions of years to survive. This includes surviving through times of famine.

Unfortunately, our brains have not had time to catch up to the modern world that we are lucky enough to live in, where lots of us have an abundance of food.

The issue is that when we try to restrict food intake through dieting, studies show that our brains still interpret this as a time of famine.

What this means is that when you diet, your body fights back to try and hold onto whatever weight you have. It’s a big part of why you experience weight loss plateaus, because our brain in its survival instincts will do things like make you more hungry and slow down your metabolism.

A very unfortunate consequence is that when you inevitably run out of willpower and give into your hunger and cravings, not only do you overindulge and eat more calories than you otherwise would, you do it with a slower metabolism. This is why you put weight back on so quickly after a diet, and even regain more weight than perhaps you even started with.

Sound familiar?

Now let’s look at the second issue with yoyo dieting and restricting foods.

How dieting and restricting foods makes you crave food more

When you restrict a certain food, you are putting it up on a pedestal. It's the old saying of don't think of an elephant. What are you thinking of now? Exactly! 🐘🐘🐘

The same thing happens when you try not to think of something like chocolate. The more you restrict it and not allow it, the more the chocolate is put up on a pedestal as something even more desirable.

Studies also support this, and in fact show that when you try to restrict foods, you are actually more likely to be overweight or obese! So instead of trying to restrict certain foods, it’s much better to learn how to include and enjoy all foods.

And thankfully using this approach you can eat all of your favourite foods and still lose weight!

The answer to stop yoyo dieting

Can you think of someone who seems to be able to eat as much of whatever they want and not put on weight? Aside from being annoying, have you ever wondered how they are able to do that?

Now perhaps you have just put it down to them having a faster metabolism. This is in fact probably true. But as discussed earlier about the impact of dieting on your metabolism, it’s probably more the case that their metabolism is still running as it should whereas yours has been affected by years of dieting.

The truth is that these people simply eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. They have not lost that connection with their internal hunger and full signals.

If you aren’t convinced, think of every wild animal in the world. There are literally none that are overweight! As opposed to domesticated animals, who are fed by humans using scientific portion sizes and meals.

Now I hear you thinking that wild animals are also just eating whole foods found in the wild, as opposed to the engineered foods that we now find in our supermarkets. And I’m certainly not going to try and argue that a cherry ripe is better than cherries. But, remember studies show that including all food is more likely to lead to weight loss!
