Healthy Ice Cream Is Possible
Have you ever wondered how some people seem to be able to eat whatever they like, including ice cream, without gaining weight?
Perhaps you’ve noticed that these “lucky” individuals don’t follow strict diets?
You might just think they have a faster metabolism, and that might be somewhat true. But not for the reasons you think. Because when you diet, studies show that your body will automatically respond by slowing your metabolism. It does this because over millions of years our brains have evolved to survive times of famine. Unfortunately, when you restrict food, your body perceives this as a famine and will do what it can to survive, including slowing your metabolism.
So instead of restricting food intake or relying on calorie calculators, naturally lean people listen to their body's natural hunger and fullness signals. They eat when they are hungry and stop when they are satisfied, without labelling foods as "good" or "bad." This intuitive approach to eating helps regulate their food intake naturally, rather than being dictated by external dieting rules.

As well as affecting your metabolism, when you diet and try to avoid “bad” foods, like ice cream, you also put those foods up on a pedestal, making them even more desirable.
It’s a bit like the old saying "don't think about elephants", what do you immediately think about? Elephants of course, and so am I as I'm writing this!
Similarly, think of any child with toys. What is the toy they always want most? The one they don’t have, particularly if they see another child playing with a different toy. It doesn’t matter if they wouldn’t usually want it. If someone else has it, they want it!

It’s no different for adults. Studies show that we are filled with desires. Arguably it’s part of what makes us human, and lets be honest you probably don’t need a study to be told this. We all want to be younger, richer, happier and/or slimmer!
Adults and humans also naturally desire what we don’t have. Which is no different when we are talking about restricting foods such as ice cream and why we can become obsessed with certain foods.
The same goes with diets when we try to restrict foods like ice cream (or calories). All that happens is the ice cream is put up on a pedestal and we desire it even more. Unfortunately, overly restricting foods is also shown to be a leading cause of binge eating.
Studies support this, showing that when you try to cut out certain foods, it actually results in weight GAIN! Yes, you read that right.
I know it sounds counterintuitive, and against what so many “experts” proclaim. But by cutting out your favourite foods like ice cream, you are more likely to put on weight rather than lose it. Basically when you do eat them, it's more likely that you will overeat and gain weight.
How to enjoy Ice Cream guilt free
So now you know how important it is to stop dieting for your metabolism and to allow all foods for weight loss. And what this means is that the recipe for the best healthy ice cream is just whatever your favourite ice cream happens to be!
You don't need to try and make a healthy alternative to something you love. Instead, enjoy the tastiest version and flavour of ice cream that you most love. Really savour the flavour and enjoy the experience.
Not that we need a study to tell us, but studies do show that humans are built for pleasure, including the pleasure that comes from eating tasty food like ice cream.
So instead of trying to fight this innate and wonderful feature of being human, it’s much better to lean into the pleasure of eating and savour the flavour of your favourite ice cream!
2 tricks to make ice cream healthy
Now obviously I’m not suggesting you go and eat all the ice cream in sight. There is a way to enjoy ice cream without overindulging and lose weight without dieting.
Here are a couple of tips to enjoy any ice cream without over indulging.
Slow down and savour the flavours of ice cream
Research has shown that eating slowly can significantly reduce the amount of calories that you consume.
The first great benefit of this is really savouring the flavour of the ice cream. It’s much harder to fully taste food when you are inhaling it!
It also gives your stomach a chance to register that it has had enough. You know those times when you still feel hungry whilst eating, then completely overly full soon after? That is your stomach taking a bit of time to register that it has had enough. Slowing down your eating gives your stomach a chance to let you know that it is full.

To practice this, simply put your ice cream spoon down between mouthfuls. Try to slow down and really savour the flavour of each mouthful.
Remove distractions
Research has also shown that you will likely consume less calories if you remove distractions.
So something as simple as turning off the TV and putting away your phone can have a significant effect on how much ice cream you eat.
Along with slowing down your eating, removing distractions also makes it easier to concentrate on the tastes of your food and really savour the flavour of your ice cream.
Amazingly, not only will you consume less calories at the time, but by removing distractions now, research also shows that you will likely be less hungry later!
